Located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada, an hour south of Reno, Nevada, the Walker Basin is a passionate region with strong local pride. The Basin offers stunning natural beauty, economic opportunities, world class recreation, and committed communities who care deeply about the local land and water. Walker Lake, between Schurz and Hawthorne, Nevada, is a breathtaking natural landmark that provides inspired economic, social, artistic, and cultural activities, but today is threatened by upstream diversions of the Walker River.

The Conservancy works to increase public access, information, and recreation opportunities within the Basin. The Conservancy conveyed more than 12,000 acres of land and nearly 30 miles of the East Walker River to the State of Nevada to become the Walker River State Recreation Area (WRSRA). The new State Park opens this area to public access and supports a diversity of wildlife. Walker Basin Conservancy continues to work closely with state agencies to manage the restoration activities on the WRSRA.

The Conservancy conveyed nearly 1,600 acres of upland and riparian land just north of Yerington, including more than three miles of the Walker River, to the State of Nevada. The land is now part of the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area managed by the Nevada Department of Wildlife and provides upland wildlife habitat in perpetuity as well as public access for hunting, fishing and general recreation.
